Midweek Push: Love With Volume

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."
(1 John 3:18, NIV)

Have you ever been in an argument and the person you were arguing with said nothing? Their silence was much louder than your shouting and had a greater impact on the direction of the dispute. Sometimes the action of silence can speak great volumes. That’s how love should be.

There is a difference between volume and loud. Have you ever heard someone go on and on about “I did this and I did that?” Maybe that person has been you. It’s easy to LOUDLY broadcast to others what you “do, will do, or have done.” But is it necessary? Is it necessary to tell everyone that you helped feed the sick, spent time with the elderly, walked the neighbor’s dog, or gave a large sum of money? Are you sharing what you’ve done to show Jesus, or to show off yourself? Let’s be honest here, have you been guilty of speaking Loud versus Loving with volume? We sure have, but let’s change that.

1 John 3:18 lets us know that love is an action word. Love must be full of volume, not just in words, but also in action and in truth. Love is more respected when it is seen as well as heard. So how can you display your love to the world without speaking? Begin to turn UP the volume by actively showing up, standing up, and serving up love to the world.

Show Up

When was the last time you skipped a favorite TV show or event and showed up in someone’s life when they least expected it? Your love with volume can be Spirit led and right on time, but you must show up. So share a meal or grab a cup of coffee with someone to make your love visible.

Stand Up

So often bad things happen because we fear standing up. If you see something wrong in your home, neighborhood, church, workplace, or your life, take a stand. Love in action makes an effort to eliminate wrongs. Standing up for what’s right may mean standing alone, but it will exhibit real love to the world.

Serve Up

Be the sacrifice without speaking. Be the hands and feet of Jesus when no one is looking. Use your hands to make a card for a soldier overseas or help build a home with Habitat for Humanity. Use your feet to carry food to the needy, or deliver coats to kids in this cold winter weather.

Are you ready to Love Loud? We encourage you to pay it forward without words. Find an opportunity to let your actions speak volumes by doing something for someone else. Then the Lord will say, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35).
