Mountain Moving Monday: Praise

Monday, April 16, 2012

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” (Psalm 42:5, NIV)

Word Study: Praise

The original meaning of praise in this verse, is taken from the Hebrew word Yadah, which means to hold out the hand, to revere or worship with extended hands, to lament, make confession, or give thanks.

Let’s look at the word praise in the scripture above to see how it applies to our lives.

Mountains of loss, hurt, pain, or discouragement may cause our souls much sadness and distress. In the verse above, the psalmist was facing something that brought his soul very low and caused him to mourn deeply. In times like these, we must not give up. Placing our hope in God and praising Him with our hands outstretched to show complete need for Him, will move mountains.

We may find ourselves stretching our hands to comfort foods or drinks to deal with stress, to risky sexual behaviors to deal with loneliness, or lamenting our woes to others when God specifically desires that our praise go to Him. When it comes to moving mountains in our lives, praise God through it all. Make your confession of sin or despair to Him, give the Lord thanks in every circumstance, and worship Him even when the mountains dark shadows loom overhead.

Prayer:

Lord, we praise you not just for what you do, but for who you are. Your presence in our lives is not only welcoming, but also comforting. We know we don’t have to feel alone, dejected, or stressed out. We want to praise and worship you freely as you have perfectly designed us to. Help us Lord, to love you at all times and allow that love be a catalyst for continued praise of your name. Life throws stones at us that make it hard to see you sometimes, but we know that if we lift our hands to you in worship, and make our complaint to you instead of dwelling on the problems ahead of us, those mountains will move. We pray believing this will happen. In Jesus' sacrificial name, Amen.

How will your praise move mountains today?

  1. Love this! We watched a story on Jeremy Camp. His first wife died of cancer. Jeremy's dad said something that has never left me. When Jeremy's wife died they were all together in the hospital room and Jeremy's dad said we have to praise God right now! So they all sang praises to God. Jeremy's dad said he held up Jeremy's arms in praise because he couldn't do it himself. Jeremy said it was one of the hardest things for him to do but he was so thankful that he did! I pray that whether I am happy or sad that I will praise! My new goal...to be less reserved in worship!!

    1. Tracy, the story on Jeremy Camp seems very powerful in the fact that God was still the main focus. In life's trials, tribulations, and troubles we tend to lose our focus. We always see God in the good but it's in the storms of life that our vision becomes blurred. As you have stated, it's about being thankful even during the hardest times. We have been so guilty of conditional praise, conditional love, conditional worship. We recognize our error and we desire to make a change. We are striving to Worship God for who He is regardless of environments. We too desire to be less reserved in worship because our God deserves ALL of us, not just fragments! If He gave His All (Jesus), why can't we give our all (our life).

Thank you for opening our eyes up to God's light & truth :)

  4. After going thru a few weeks of meditation, with Christian music from Youtube, I realized that when God says "Have Faith In ME, YOUR GOD", it means to totally leave it in HIS hands because "HE" will take care of it. All HE wants us to do is to repent for what we have done in our life and really LOVE, without judging, criticizing, or assuming, which are all ways of hurting others. Then we can have a clean heart and receive, what our GOD wants us to have, the FAITH that all is possible with GOD...48 years old and finally understanding this, after much pain, trials and tribulations
Thank you Sisters With A Purpose for all you help, encouragement and support, we couldnt stay in FAITH if it were not for these means of communication and the beautiful music we can listen to :)
    Sincerely, Veronica

    1. Amen to that Veronica! Thank you for sharing this with us. Many times His word does minister to us through song to help us better understand the type of God He is. Faith IS having complete and utter dependence on God who can handle whatever IT is so much better than we ever could. Thank you for your reminder to LOVE! You say 48 years and just understanding, and we say God's timing is so perfect! You understood when He knew you would be able to grasp what it means to praise Him without restraint! Repentance and giving our lives over to him in baptism and complete trust places us on the road to releasing all those hurts, humps, and hurdles that try to slow us down. We are just so humbled and thankful for your words Veronica. They are helping us to grow daily as well as keep us grounded! Thank you for sharing...you are truly a Sister With A Purpose! God Bless you!
