Mountain Moving Monday: Listen

“Therefore consider carefully how you listen.” (Luke 8:18, NIV)

Word Study: Listen

The original meaning of listen in this verse is taken from the Greek word, Akouo, which means to hear, give audience to, and to understand.

Let’s look at the word listen in the scripture above to see how it applies to our lives.

A common phrase among parents around the world is, “listen to me when I’m talking to you.” Either you’ve said it or had someone say it to you. To the child receiving this message it means to pay close attention to what my parent is saying by facing them, looking them in the eye and obeying what they say. When God speaks to us through the scriptures, He expects us to do the same. He wants us to turn to face Him, pay close attention to His word to receive the message clearly, and to obey what He says.

How often do we find ourselves moving ahead of God, following our own agenda? In the parable of the sower in Luke 8, it was guaranteed that God’s word would either fall on deaf ears, some would hear and not understand, others would forget what they heard while others would get the message clearly and obey. Where are you in the list?

Jesus goes on to say, consider carefully how you listen. Are we just getting sneak peaks at God’s Word everyday? Are we coming up with our own interpretations? Maybe we’re just taking someone else’s word for it. God wants us to study and listen to Him with all that is within us; and giving His word our undivided attention allows the Holy Spirit to help us understand what we read (John 16:13).

You can move your mountains today by listening to what God’s word says on the matter. Your mountains can be defeated in many ways: by being still (Psalm 46:10), by enduring suffering (1 Peter 4:12-16), or by pressing forward (Philippians 3:14), but the key is listening to how God is directing. Don’t move ahead, until you’ve heard what He’s said!

Heavenly Father, we come to your throne honestly. We lay aside our pride and our arrogance. We humbly confess that sometimes we move ahead of you because we either forget, refuse to listen, or just don’t understand what your word says for us to do. We ask Lord, that you open our hearts to listen intently and intentionally so that we can move our mountains on your terms and not ours. Direct our paths and make your word clear so that we may grow accordingly! In the incredible name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

How will you listen to move mountains today?
