"If we suffer, we shall also reign with him:" (2 Timothy 2:12)

Word Study: Reign

The original meaning of reign in this verse is taken from the Greek word, Sumbasileuo, (pronounced soom-bas-il-yoo-o), which means to reign with, to possess supreme liberty and honor.

Let’s look at the word reign in the scripture above to see how it applies to our lives.

Aren’t you ready to be treated as heir to the throne? In Christ, we have that very privilege, but it doesn’t come without hardship, suffering, and persecution. Sometimes we want to have control, yet God says down here is not the time; later you shall reign with Him if you've suffered a bit.

To suffer persecution for the cause of Christ (not to be confused with causing trouble to fall upon you by meddling or engaging in risk taking behaviors which lead to placing yourself in hazardous conditions) ultimately results in the ability to rise up over evil and reign with the Lord. Timothy mentions two other times (1:12, 3:12), the blessing of persevering through persecutions and suffering here on earth without being ashamed. This is a reminder that a great reward awaits us if we stand through the struggle.

So how does reigning later with Christ in heaven, help me move mountains today, you may ask? The acronym below may help you look at your suffering down here in a different light so that you may move your mountains in power and faith, to later share in Christ’s triumphs in heaven.

Refocus on the honor. God considered you, so He trusts that you will overcome your trials

Exemplify Christ by rebuking satan with the word which puts him in check

Include constant prayer in your life. If you just need someone to listen, God is available

Glorify God. One thing the enemy can’t stand is praising God through our suffering

Navigate your heart to find a reason to celebrate your deliverance from struggles

Dear God, teach us to trust you when volatile storms come to knock us off track. Bring to our remembrance your word that says our suffering here will allow us to reign with you one day in heaven. Lord, we trust you. We know that trouble won’t last always and that if we find our pillows soiled with tears in the night, your joy awakens us in the morning. Help us Father to not attempt to tame things we have no control over. We want to learn patience and endurance like your Son. Show us the way, Lord, so that, when we see you in glory, we can praise and rule with our elder brother Jesus, who left His footsteps for us to follow in. In Jesus’ humble and precious name we pray, Amen.

How will your reign in heaven prepare you to move mountains today?
