Here’s a Bible question from one of our SWAPs:

Q: Hello S.W.A.P. Ministries, does God tempt us?

SM: Hi there! That’s a very good question with an answer that can be found in scripture. James 1:13-17 says,

When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. 16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Many times when we go through trials and troubles in life, God is usually the first one to catch the blame for causing us pain. However, it’s not in His nature to willingly bring evil on us as stated in Lamentations 3:33, “For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone.” Temptation cannot be named among God because His mind doesn’t create wicked devices for Him to present to us, nor can He be prompted to do wrong.

Because we have free will, we can be drawn away by our own desires to do wrong; it’s not what God places before us, it is satan presenting evil to us as he is roaming the earth, seeking souls to devour (Job 1:6-7, Peter 5:8).

God does test us to strengthen us for good works and to increase our faith (Job 23:10, Psalm 26:2, 66:10); however never for the purpose of causing us to sin. As the scripture states, every good and perfect gift comes from our Father above!

We thank you for your question and pray that it will help you in drawing closer to God!
