Here’s a Bible question from one of our SWAPs:

Q: I’ve heard people say that they believe in religion, but not God; or they believe in a higher power, but not God. Can you help me with this?

SM: That’s a great question and very relevant for the times that we live in. The answer to that question is that’s fair. There are people that say they believe in a higher power; there are people who say they are spiritual but do not believe in organized religion; and that’s fair. We know it sounds strange, but it’s true. It’s fair because Exodus 20:3 tells us that God is clear that we should have no other gods before Him; and the scripture also says we have free will to make our own decisions (Hebrews 10:26, 1 Corinthians 3:8, Judges 10:14, Proverbs 1:29).

This just confirms that there are things that people are going to put before God. Christians believe that there is only one God and that His word is true. Christians believe what the scriptures say and should be proclaiming that regardless of what others place before Him. However, there are others who will say there is no God (Psalm 14:1) and that there is a higher power. They are entitled to that belief, just like you are entitled to yours because we all have the ability to choose. Yet, regardless of what others say or believe, stick to what you know is true; God’s word that won’t fail.

In the end, let God prove what is true because His word says, “at the name of Jesus... every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” (Philippians 2:10). Sometimes the fight may not be with your words, but with your life, so live like you believe that there is ONE God and that you believe that His word is the truth. But it’s fair, that people may say, “I don’t believe in religion; I believe in a higher power, not God.” Not everyone believes, but since YOU DO, live like it, and let God do the changing of his or her hearts as HE wills.

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11)

For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it! As the truth of Christ is in me, no one shall stop me from this boasting in the regions of Achaia. But what I do, I will also continue to do, that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 11:4, 10,12-13)

But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.” (Matthew 15:13)

We thank you for your question and pray that it will help you in drawing closer to God!
