Thankful Thursday

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving.” (Psalm 69:30)

USE OUR MOUTHS. LIFT OUR VOICES. GIVE THANKS UNTO THE LORD.

When the idea of Thanksgiving comes up, most of us think of celebrating by using our mouths to enjoy juicy turkey, savory dressing, down home smoky greens, creamy macaroni-and-cheese, sweet sticky yams, and a host of pies, cakes and other edible treats.

Today, let us consider using our mouths as instruments of Thanksgiving.  Let us lift our voices and declare the praises of the Lord!

  • Our Voices are Instruments of Confession/Praise and Thanksgiving
    • “O Lord, open my lips, that my mouth may declare Your praise” (Psalm 51:15)
  • Songs of Praise and Thanksgiving
    • “Give thanks with a grateful heart; Give thanks to the Holy One; Give thanks, because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son”
    • “Count your many blessings name them one by one; Count your many blessings see what God has done”

The gift of song may be one of the most beautiful expressions of thanksgiving and praise that each of us can offer to God. Whether we are blessed with the vocal gifts of Mariah Carey, or if our crooning sounds to us (and others) more like the call of the wild, each of us can offer a joyful noise unto the Lord by making melody in our hearts.

Let us consider these seven passages of scripture and may we be encouraged to lift our voices in song and magnify our Heavenly Father with Thanksgiving.

1. “Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms.” (Psalm 95:2)

2. “Sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God.” (Psalm 147:7)

    • Even if our voices are not akin to the morning songbird, each of us still has a gift or talent within us that we can offer with thanksgiving in praise unto the Lord.

3. “For in the days of David and Asaph of old, there were chief of the singers and songs of praise and thanksgiving…” (Nehemiah 12:8).

    • Praising the Lord with songs of thanksgiving is not a new thing at all. God’s people have been lifting their hearts and voices in songs of praise and thanksgiving to the Father since the days of old.

4. “Then you will recite to one another psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs: you will sing and make music to the Lord with your hearts.” (Ephesians 5:19)

5. “So what shall I do?  I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.” (1 Corinthians 14:15)

6. “In that day you will say: “Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that His name is exalted. Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.” (Isaiah 12:4-6)

7. “The sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom, and the voices of those who bring thank offerings to the house of the LORD, saying, "Give thanks to the LORD Almighty, for the LORD is good; his love endures forever." For I will restore the fortunes of the land as they were before,' says the LORD.” (Jeremiah 33:11)

Many praise and worship songs are based on scripture and the promises of God, like Psalm 23, Psalm 89:1, Revelation 4:8. What are your favorite songs of praise and thanksgiving?

Lift your voice and offer them to the Lord today!

Scriptures to Reflect On:

Psalm 26:7, 100:4, 119:171
Jeremiah 30:19
Jonah 2:9a
1 Corinthians 14:26
Colossians 3:16
Hebrews 13:15
