Thankful Thursday

[Sisters], stand up! Shine! Your new day is dawning. The glory of the Lord shines brightly upon you.” (Adapted for emphasis from Isaiah 60:1)

Out with the old and in with the new! We can be thankful for each sparkling new day that the Lord sends because each is filled with great expectations! There are hundreds, if not thousands of opportunities for us to give thanks, beginning when we first wake up – we can thank God for a brand new breath of Life! We can thank Him for the promise that each new day holds; filled with mystery and hope and the potential for improvement. Every day is a good day to praise the Lord!

I love new days and new opportunities, don’t you? Perhaps my most favorite passage of scripture is Lamentations 3:22-24: “Because of the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions do not fail. They are new every morning; Great is Thy Faithfulness. The Lord is my portion says my soul, therefore I have hope in Him.”

Is there anything more encouraging than knowing that we get a do-over with every new sunrise?

Ideally, when each of us faces a test, we pass with flying colors…right? Well, what if we don’t? What if we fail? What if we fail the make-up test? Our brother Peter knows a little something about failing the test, the make-up test, and then failing the test after that!

  • Test number 1—Mark 16:66-68 “And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:  And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth. But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest.” Peter’s score – Failed!
  • Test number 2—Mark 16:69-70 “And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, this is one of them. And he denied it again…Peter’s score – Failed! Again!
  • Test number 3—Matthew 26:72 “And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.” Peter’s score – Failed! Again!
  • Test number 4—Matthew 26:73-74 “And after awhile they that stood by said unto Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee.  Then Peter began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man...Failed, Failed, Failed!

“…and immediately the cock crew.”

  • And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow thou shalt deny me three times. And he went out, and wept bitterly.” (Matthew 26:75)

If Peter’s story ended there, it would be a sad tale indeed. But Peter learned powerful lessons from his failures and went on to become one of the most inspirational and heroic servants of the Lord who ever lived!

So today, dear sisters, no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in, let us remember to give thanks unto the Lord for newness of Life!

Behold, all things are become new!”

Here are seven “new” reasons we can thank God each day:

1. “By calling this covenant new He has made the first one obsolete and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.” (Hebrews 8:13)
2. “He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and True.” (Revelation 21:5)
3. “Therefore, we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that a Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of Life.” (Romans 6:4)
4. “A new day will dawn on us from above because our God is loving and merciful” (Luke 1:78)
5. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
6. “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26)
7. Praise be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3)

I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” (Philippians 1:3-6)
