Midweek Push: Real Love (Part 3)

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” (John 7:24)

Each week we will examine a scenario, our natural judgment towards the scenario, and address how we should approach the scenario through the real love of Christ.

Scenario:

You see them. Lifting up holy hands. Embracing you with a “blessed and highly favored” every week. It’s the always Praising, Loudest Amen-ing, Longest Testifying, Jesus Gon’ Work it Out Weeping, Shout Contest winning, Holy Ghost couple of the church! They show up early and leave late. She is the best dressed among all the sisters. He gives the best prayers among all the brethren.

Judgmental Assumption:

They are holier than thou! They are always perpetrating praise to look good in front of the preacher. Their praise is so loud and annoying. Our natural assumption is that this couple has it all together, yet we keep them at a distance because they don’t seem genuine.

Real Love:

Stop being the praise police and get to know why this brother and sister are raising their hands as they worship God. Do you even know them personally? Or do you judge them because their praise is so loud? All too often we look at people that are extra vocal about Christ as being showy, holier than thou, Jesus freaks. We don’t know how God has blessed their lives, so we should not judge their praise.

God may have brought them through a rough patch in their marriage so that’s why he’s praying like that; God may have healed an infirmity that they didn’t tell the church about, that’s why they’re raising their hands. God may have given them clarity that helps them save a bit more money so she can finally buy some nice clothes for herself…something she didn’t have as a child. Being so quick to judge a person’s praise could be an indication of the absence of your own.

Real love is slow to criticize and quick to praise. Real love prays for a community of believers that are not ashamed to share their testimonies. Real love worships God genuinely, not looks around judging other people’s worship.

Scriptures to Reflect On:

Psalm 22:22
Psalm 35:18
Psalm 63:3-4
Romans 14:10-13
Hebrews 2:12
Hebrews 13:15

How would you show real love in this scenario?

"This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another." (1 John 4:10-11)
