And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.” (Matthew 13:3-8)

How’s your prayer life? You’re probably wondering how did that question come out of that scripture. We don’t often think of this passage and relay it to prayer, but it’s something we should practice. Our prayers have a lot to do with how we think and behave.

Let’s evaluate our prayer life based off of Matthew 13:3-8:

1: Way side (to fail to continue, give up)

Where are your prayers landing? Are they way sided? Do your prayers stop when you don’t get your way? Do you stop praying when God answers your prayers?

2: Stony places (hardness, unfeeling, heartless)

Are you just praying out of habit? No feeling, no connection, no intimacy with God? Have your prayers grown hard because you don’t really mean what you are uttering? Has your prayer life become a duty instead of a desire?

3: Thorns (a source of continual irritation, trouble, or discomfort)

Do your prayers hurt? Really, if others heard you pray out loud would they be comforted or afraid? Would they be offended or encouraged? Does praying to God and waiting on His timing irritate you? Do you only pray to God in times of trouble? Do you only pray about your struggles, and not your joys; your problems and not peace; your mess and not His message?

4: Good ground (positive or desirable, not bad or poor, not spoiled or ruined)

Does prayer do your soul some good? Do you enjoy praying to a God of power? Do you desire to pray to God and listen to His answers? Is your prayer life pleasurable? Do you go before the throne of God and praise Him for who He is and not just for what He can give you? When you don’t pray do you feel like you’ve missed something good?

Did some of the questions under wayside, stony, thorns, or good ground prick your heart?

We don’t know where you fall, or where your prayers are falling, but what we do know is that we can all improve! We can all grow in the way we connect to God through prayer. What do you need to pray about today…your attitude, your heart, your finances, your singleness, your marriage, your divorce, your bitterness, your job, your home, your future, your fears, your response to leadership, your church, your country, your ____________?

When you pray, pray that God’s Will be done! We are sure when He is leading your life, your prayers will fall on good ground! This push is to encourage you to pray earnestly, passionately, and purposely! Pray AND Believe! Pray and see!
