Blessed are…” (Matthew 5:3-11)

Are you happy? No, seriously, are you truly happy?

The type of “happy” we are referring to has nothing to do with the changing circumstances you deal with, yet has everything to do with what’s constant in life.

Often when we speak of happiness, it usually deals with how we feel: “I’m happy because I have a mate,” or “being financially stable makes me happy.” You feel good that good things are happening around you and to you.

Even though circumstances change in life, we may not always “feel happy” about it, but children of God are always happy. No you didn’t just read a contradiction; one of the spiritual definitions of happy is to be blessed. No matter what’s going on, God’s children are always blessed.

In Jesus’ sermon on the mount (Matthew 5:3-11), He describes happy people:

3 Blessed (Happy) are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed (Happy) are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed (Happy) are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed (Happy) are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7 Blessed (Happy) are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed (Happy) are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9 Blessed (Happy) are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

10 Blessed (Happy) are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed (Happy) are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

No matter what material blessings you have or don’t have, you are blessed

No matter if you’re overlooked and misused, you are blessed

No matter if the boss keeps piling stuff on your plate that you didn’t sign up for, you are blessed

No matter if people abandon you when you stand up for what you know is right, you are blessed

No matter if you’re not achieving what society says you should have achieved already at your age, you are blessed

No matter if you keep giving, but others just keep taking, you are blessed

No matter if you don’t know where your next meal is coming from, you are blessed

So the next time someone asks you if you’re happy, you can boldly say, “yes I am” because you know it’s not based on a fluctuating circumstance, but on His everlasting purpose. No matter what changes around you, the God in you never will.

Don’t let saying “I’m blessed and highly favored” merely be something you quote, let it be something you live. As God’s child, you have every reason to be happy, every reason to be blessed.
