Choose you this day whom you will serve.” (Joshua 24:15)

Word Study: Choose

The original meaning of choose in this verse is taken from the Hebrew word BACHAR, which means to try, select, appoint, excellent, and make a choice.

Let’s look at the word choose in the scripture above to see how it applies to our lives.

Everyday we’re making choices. We choose whether to stay in bed or to get up; we make the choice to smile through our troubles or grumble about our daily “got to” lists. We choose to yell at our family or cradle them with love. Joshua boldly made the statement,

Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (vs. 14-15)

Are you boldly choosing God over all else?

The things we choose over Christ can become idols that we worship and eventually pass down to generations after us to serve. How many times have you chosen to do something, because that’s how it’s always been done or because a family member has always told you to do it that way? What have you chosen to make an idol in your life? When we don’t choose to serve God, we choose to make idols of everything else.

Choosing to serve man or choosing to serve the Master. Choosing to say singleness is suffering or choosing to praise God regardless of your relationship status. Choosing complaints or choosing the Comforter. Choosing to spread gossip or choosing to spread the gospel. Choosing to worry or choosing to worship…

Your choices can make permanent monuments in your life. Move the mountain of idolatry out of your way by choosing today to serve the Lord.

Dear Lord, we choose to serve you and you alone. We honor you for your love and for choosing us before you even formed the world. We thank you for your choice of Jesus as our Savior! May we daily strive to choose Him over our struggles and seek peace in Him versus things or people that we’ve created as idols. Continue using us Father to move mountains out of our lives that cloud our view of You. In the humble name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

How will you choose to move mountains today?
