Believest Thou Are His: Lesson 4

Monday, February 24, 2014

And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction:” (1 Corinthians 7:35)

Ever since that scheming serpent came onto the scene, mankind has proven to be easily distracted. Adam and Eve were clearly distracted when they ignored the Lord’s warnings and believed a serpent’s lie. One could say they weren’t attending to the Lord during that moment, but being swept away by the lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, and pride of life.

Have you been there? You know God has commanded you to wait on Him, refrain from sexual immorality, and to seek Him for fulfillment, yet satan introduces an easier, more appealing option and you become attracted to the distraction. You find yourself like Eve crunching on the fruit of folly. Satan, even now, wants to distract you by entertaining your desires, by confusing your thoughts, and by diverting your attention away from pleasing the Lord.

In what ways do you find yourself distracted in your single life?

The single woman is often distracted by other’s urging her to date and be married; by her own desires to seek intimacy; by married couples sharing their R-rated versions of a happy marriage; and even by social media misleading her to believe that singleness is for losers. These are satan’s tactics to get you attracted to distraction.

When the single woman becomes confident in God’s promises versus the world’s persuasive standards, she can live a life focused, fixated, and following after the Father.

When you are FOCUSED – you let nothing sidetrack you. Every single guy that walks through the church doors doesn’t easily distract you. You don’t take a detour to Do-It-My-Own-Way-Ville, because waiting takes too long. You’re focused. You don’t deviate from God’s design for your life because you’re centered & concentrating on Christ.

When you are FIXATED – your eyes are fixed on the Father. You only see Him because your eyes are directed towards the Word. Your sights are unmoved, because what you see in God is what you desire for your life. You’re fixated because you’re consumed by His comfort.

When you are FOLLOWING – you crave getting next to Him and you desire to serve Him in totality. You spend your time working to honor God, not working to get a date. You’re following after the Lord, not looking back at what could have been.

Believest Thou Are His or believest thou are okay to have an attraction for distraction?

To the Lord belongs all our attention; but how can we give God our all when our sights are completely focused on why we’re still single? To “attend upon the Lord” requires giving God full attention by completely focusing on His word and living it out in our lives no matter our relationship status. Attending isn’t afraid to wait; attending is content in this place. Attending is confident in her calling and sees God’s way as more important than any other way.

Questions for Reflection:

1) How are you distracted in your single life?

2) What/who are you focused on? Fixated on? Following after?

3) Believest Thou Are His enough to not be distracted by the world’s attractions?
