Thankful Thursday

And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.”
(Luke 7:37-38)

STEP OUT

Love has been said to make you do some crazy things. We’re sure many of you know this feeling very well, but how crazy in love are we for Jesus? For this woman, it meant stepping out of Jewish custom. It was against the culture of that day for women to let their hair down for any man that wasn’t her husband, however, she broke free from tradition in order to show Jesus her love. Her extreme love showed when she stepped out of custom and into connection.

Some rules were made to be broken, if they’re going to lead us to the Father.

We may have to forsake mother and father’s religion to have a radical relationship with Jesus. We may have to raise our hands in praise or shout and say amen to show our love. We may have to step out from the crowd and tell any and everybody about Jesus. What tradition or custom do you need to step out of to honor God with your love?

In order to step out of custom, we have to put ourselves in close quarters with Jesus.

We are thankful today that the sinful woman's love was so strong that stepping out of custom didn’t cause rebuke from Jesus; instead He affirmed her (“Her sins which are many are forgiven her; for she loved much” Luke 7:47). When we’re in the presence of Jesus, He takes care of us, He shelters us, and He affirms us. Sometimes loving God will take us out of our element, but when we’re in Him and He’s in us there’s no better comfort zone to be in.

Though it may look strange to others, let us thank God zealously for forgiving our sins. Though our worship may look out of character, our love will challenge the norm.

This Thankful Thursday, what traditions will you step out of to show Jesus you love Him?
