Thankful Thursday

Thursday, September 18, 2014

And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.”
(Luke 7:37-38)

Many times we won’t serve Jesus because we don’t feel we have enough, we don’t have what it takes, we don’t have the courage, or we don’t have the faith.

If we look at the woman in the passage, she had everything she needed to serve Jesus. She had her hair, her tears, and her livelihood. She didn’t have a 500-thread count hand towel or fresh spring water to wash His feet; she used what she had to serve Him with love.

Serving God is personal.

She used her tears of joy to wash Jesus’ feet. She didn’t cry because others in the room were filled with tears and emotion. She looked deep within herself and expressed her thankfulness unto her Jesus for who He was and what He’d done! We don’t know what He’s done for others to make them serve the way they do; but we do know what He’s done for us, and His love should compel us to love Him with everything that’s within us.

She also used her hair to wipe His feet. We don’t have to possess another’s gifts to serve the Lord. He just wants us to serve Him with the gift that He’s given us. It’s not about looking at how others serve Him, how are you using your body to honor God? We serve Him by presenting our bodies a living sacrifice, by renewing our minds daily, and by having a pure and humble heart! We show our love to God by loving the bodies He’s given us, and placing them in subjection and service to His will.

She used her livelihood (the box of ointment) to anoint His feet. Everything we do is for His glory, not our own. She wasn’t looking to be praised for the amount of money the oils cost that she used to anoint Him. Her money didn’t matter at that time because she used it all up on Him anyway. If it’s being a good gardener, serve Him with love. If it’s being a nurse, serve Him with love. If it's being an entrepreneur, serve Him with love. If it’s working with children, serve Him with love. When God blesses us with livelihood things, we serve Him by using it for His glory.

You may not have another’s testimony, but thank God you have your own! You may not have the wealth that another person has, but thank God He approved one woman’s 2 mites as faithfulness to Him. Are you Thankful this Thursday for what you have? If we’re not grateful for what we have within us, it can be taken away, so let's use what we have to serve Him; it may be all that the Father needs to see as proof that you truly love Him.

What are you thankful to have that you can serve God with today?
