Mountain Moving Monday: Teach

Monday, June 22, 2015

Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” (Matthew 28:19)

Word Study: Teach

The original meaning of teach in this verse is taken from the Greek word, Matheteuo (math-ayt-yoo-o), which means to disciple, enroll as a scholar, instruct, and to activate learning.

Let’s look at the word teach in the scripture above to see how it applies to our lives.

We discussed last week the problem of judging others on appearance and learning to look at the soul who needs saving. We found that we hurt our witness, by judging the ones to whom we are witnessing. We learned that we couldn’t effectively lead people to Christ when we’re turning them away because of our judgmental hearts and attitudes.

This week, we want to learn to move the mountain of watered-down gospel living by remembering to teach the gospel to every living soul. The first priority of Christians is to study and learn so that we might go out and make more Christians.

Yes, we praise God for His grace, which allowed us time to be obedient to the gospel! We thank Him for delivering us from His wrath at the judgment! We worship Him for giving us His Son, Jesus as a sacrifice because we alone could not save ourselves.

But we are not to hoard the gospel for ourselves, stashing it away in our sanctuaries only to release it on special Sundays. No, we are not to be blessed by God and keep the blessing of the gospel for ourselves; we’re supposed to go out and teach others about this blessing so that they too can be blessed.

All kids growing up are taught to share. If the mother or father blesses them with a toy, they are to share that toy with their siblings or even a friend who comes over so that they too can experience the joy felt from such an item. When that child throws a fit, he or she is reprimanded for being stingy.

Our Father, too, will reprimand us, if we are stingy with the gospel of Christ (Matthew 10:33, Luke 9:26, 12:9). If we want to break through watered-down gospel living, we must teach. It is our responsibility to teach Him, not to deny Him before others.

The world needs Jesus and the church has to be willing to share Him.

We must go out into all nations. We can't be too good for the ghettos, the valleys, the suburbs, or the ditches. Sometimes we become so glad that we're saved that we neglect those places which are filled with people still needing Jesus. We can’t withhold the gospel because someone doesn’t look like us, live on our street, or speak the same language as us. We can’t withhold the gospel because it would make us uncomfortable or take us away from our daily luxuries.

We have to GO into! We lose so many opportunities to teach the saving message of the gospel because we’re waiting on people to come to us. The command was to go…and teach…not wait for the perfect opportunity to present the gospel just right or to lie in wait to pounce on and pound a soul with our built up biblical knowledge. We have to GO!

Where will you go today, to move the mountain of watered-down gospel living?
Will you pray that God gives you a mouth and wisdom that no one will be able to gainsay or contradict your words (Luke 21:15)?
Will you teach others what you learned so that they too might be saved?

The gospel is much shinier and lasts much longer than a toy, so it must be shared. Don’t be the stingy child who doesn’t want to share her gift with the world. Be a committed daughter of God, ready and willing to swap the message of His saving grace with any person He places in your path.

Dear Father, we pray at this time thanking you for your word, which is true, powerful, redeeming, and comforting! We thank you for the Gospel message that saves us when we are obedient to it. As we go out into the world on this day, we ask your wisdom as we teach the gospel to others. If we’ve been hoarding the gospel for fear of feeling like we’re not good enough to teach, God forgive us and help us to rebuke that spirit in the name of Jesus. May we put our armor on today, and allow your spirit to speak through us as we teach in your name, and not our own. In Jesus’ name we teach and pray, Amen!

  1. Such a wonderful lesson and wonderful reminder of how we should definitely spread the word of God... and it needs to be spread. Question: Who better better to spread the word than those who have it to spread! A set of scriptures comes to mind and it is so important to heed... Mathew 5:14-16.

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

I bring that up to pose the question: WE have been blessed with LIGHT... why on earth would we ever not want to share that? Why would we ever want to hide that? Should we not share that with the uttermost EXCITEMENT! The message that the gospel gives us... don't we want to share that good news of love with others that they may have it too?
