Breaking Through Meaningless Living: She Lives Her Life to Glorify God

Friday, October 23, 2015

“Everyone who is called by My name, And whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made.” (Isaiah 43:7)

Gospel vocalist, Jessica Reedy, released a song entitled, Blue God, which has the following lyrics:

“…Because it's all about
My Agenda, My Plans, My Goals
My Money, Get it funny
Your Cons, and My Pros
I'm Happy, Successful
O Lord I'll tell you when I need you
We don't say it but surely we do it
O it's how we live
And it's how we treat you
But if you want
I’ll let you rule
In my life
If you make me feel good
And if you make it all right
Just take care of me
And give me what I need
After that
Then maybe
We can get to you, God…”

In this song, Reedy points out how we are so focused on ourselves that we may only call on God when we need Him. Only when God does something in our lives that we find pleasing, do we finally give Him honor and attention. Our lives are magnified while His will is insignificant.

Based off of this, Reedy sings that God must be blue. Have you ever heard of the phrase “feeling blue?” It means feeling sad, to the point of depression or grief. When God’s people tend to look to their own way, it grieves Him (Gen. 6:5-6) because we were created to glorify Him (Isaiah 43:7).

Glorify means to boast, honor, promote, magnify, and esteem.

Want to know how to glorify God, get into His word! Simple enough, right? The scriptures should be like a fire shut up inside you, that you can’t help but to tell it (Jeremiah 20:9)!

Jesus, after His death and resurrection, appeared to two men who were on the road to Emmaus. They talked with Him; not knowing it was the risen Lord. Luke 24:32, states, “And they said to one another, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?’” When they realized they were in the presence of God, their hearts burned within them and they went immediately and told that Jesus had arisen.

When we get into God’s Word, we learn who He is and what He loves and our lives begin to reflect it. We can’t help but tell it!

Has God moved a major mountain in your life? Has he given you wisdom after a time of uncertainty? Has He given you peace in the midst of your problems? Have you opened His word and found comfort in His presence?

Well…have you testified of it yet? Are you living like He’s too good to keep to yourself!?

This Freedom Friday, remember that a sister with a purpose glorifies God because she was created to do so. She glorifies God because she doesn’t want Him to feel blue; and she glorifies God because He’s too good to keep to herself!

Questions for Reflection:

1. Have I given more honor and attention to myself than God?
2. How am I currently demonstrating that God is good in my life?
3. Will I start today glorifying God?

Scriptures to reflect on:

1 Corinthians 10:31 – “so whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God

Psalm 86:12 – “I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever.”
